Can I play with a controller?
A controller works. Which parts of the game it works in is the question neither source answers.
Quick answer
Yes, with a caveat NerveLabs states itself: the Steam listing's category is Partial Controller Support, not full controller support. PCGamingWiki independently records controller support as present and XInput controllers as supported. Beyond that the record stops — full controller support, controller remapping, controller sensitivity, stick inversion and Xbox button prompts are all left unknown on the wiki, and NerveLabs has published no control document. Keyboard and mouse are the fully documented path: key remapping and mouse sensitivity are both recorded as supported, and both mouse axes can be inverted.
Early Access note: this page is verified for Early Access Update 7; mechanics, locations and commands may change in later updates.
Steps
- Connect an XInput-compatible controller — an Xbox pad or anything that presents itself as one. PCGamingWiki records XInput controllers as supported.
- Expect to keep a keyboard and mouse within reach. Partial Controller Support is Steam's category for a game that does not cover the whole experience on a pad, and NerveLabs chose that category rather than the full one.
- Set your bindings on the keyboard side, where the record is solid: key remapping is recorded as supported, as is mouse sensitivity, and both the Y and the X axis can be inverted.
- Test menus and any text entry with the pad before committing to a long session. Whether menus are fully navigable on a controller is exactly what the sources leave unknown.
- If a pad control is missing or unbindable, report it through the official Steam Discussion or Discord rather than assuming it is intended. NerveLabs is shipping updates rapidly and asks for reports directly.
Requirements / limits
- Partial Controller Support is a NerveLabs declaration on its own store page. It is the developer telling you in advance that the pad does not cover everything.
- The unknown fields on PCGamingWiki are gaps in the record, not recorded absences. Controller remapping, controller sensitivity, controller stick inversion, Xbox prompts and full controller support are all marked unknown, which means nobody has filled them in — it does not mean the features are missing.
- No cited source publishes a button map, a default binding list or a controller options screenshot.
- Mouse acceleration is the one input option explicitly recorded as absent: PCGamingWiki marks the acceleration option as not present, alongside key remapping and mouse sensitivity as present.
- Update 7 changed how quests mark the map and rebuilt the Tower introduction, so any pad advice written during launch week describes different menus from the ones you will see.
Common mistakes
- Reading Partial Controller Support as a bug report. It is a category NerveLabs selected, describing scope rather than quality.
- Reading “unknown” on a wiki as “no”. Those two rows mean opposite things, and most of the controller rows on this game's page are the first one.
- Buying for a couch session on the strength of split-screen alone. Split-screen is declared on the store; full pad coverage is not.
- Assuming controller remapping exists because key remapping does. Only the keyboard row is recorded.
