How do I fix a crash after the NerveLabs logo?

The developer tied most launch-logo crashes on Nvidia hardware to pre-600 drivers and added a warning in Update 6.

Quick answer

If the game crashes after the NerveLabs logo on an Nvidia GPU, update the Nvidia driver to version 600 or newer, then relaunch. NerveLabs called older Nvidia drivers the source of most crashes and added a pre-600 warning in Update 6. If you are already on 600+ or do not use Nvidia, this source does not establish the cause.

Steps

  1. Confirm whether the PC uses an Nvidia GPU and note the installed driver version.
  2. If the version is below 600, install a current Nvidia driver through Nvidia's normal driver channel.
  3. Restart if the driver installer requests it, then launch the game again.
  4. If the crash remains on driver 600 or newer, report it through the official Steam Discussion or Discord instead of assuming the same cause.

Requirements / limits

  • The documented cause and threshold apply to Nvidia drivers.
  • The official Steam minimum is Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 970 / R9 290-class GPU or better.
  • The notes do not say that every crash has the same driver cause.

Common mistakes

  • Reinstalling the game before checking the driver warning.
  • Applying the Nvidia-specific diagnosis to an AMD or Intel GPU.
  • Assuming the page promises recovery from a damaged save; it does not.
