Where is the egg the woman in the Grand Hall asks for?

Six unrelated recordings sit through this conversation, four transcribe the riddle in the same words, and two read the journal entry aloud. Not one of them finds the egg — one player is still re-triggering the same speech five hours later.

Quick answer

The quest-giver stands in the Grand Hall, the last room of the tower interior before the Saint’s Amphitheater. She hands you an egg, then asks you to find the next one. Two players read the journal entry aloud on different days and both say the same thing: the egg is well guarded somewhere at the top of the tower. Her own directions are a riddle — “It rests where the wind has no echo and the sun casts two shadows”, and “the wisest hens make their nests in high places where crawling things cannot reach them”. No recording in this repository reaches it, so this page publishes the quest, the two journal readings and the riddle, and stops there.

Early Access note: this page is verified for Early Access Update 7; mechanics, locations and commands may change in later updates.

Steps

  1. Follow the tower interior through to the Grand Hall. It is the room immediately before the Saint’s Amphitheater: one player enters the hall at 00:17:40 and is standing in the Amphitheater at 00:18:17.
  2. The approach is upward. Another recording reaches it by a staircase, remarking at 01:54:50 that stairs going up are a good sign.
  3. Talk to the woman standing inside. She greets the player as Pilgrim and is addressed on a later approach as the matron of the will.
  4. Take the egg she offers. Two players’ inventories call the item a soft-boiled egg.
  5. Ask her what to do next. That question is what opens the quest — in three of the recordings the riddle only plays after the player asks it.
  6. Tell her you will find the egg. She answers with the second half of the directions, about hens nesting in high places.
  7. Then you are on your own. The journal says the top of the tower; nothing in the source pool says where at the top, and nothing in the source pool gets there.

What she actually says

Four channels recording on four different days transcribe this speech in the same words in the same order, which is as close to reading the script as a video source gets. It is quoted here rather than paraphrased because the directions are inside the wording.

Her opening, before the player has said anything: “I was told there would be a burst. Instead, I met a stillness so heavy it pressed me eyes shut forever. That’s how I knew it was sacred. This egg has been waiting for you. Will you answer its plea?”

When the player accepts: “He is watching for you. Soon I will be the midwife in the birth of the immaculate will.” Asked who is watching, she answers: “The one whose invitation you answered. The one at whose door you knock. He is sitting at the window and beckoning you in.”

The quest itself: “The next egg is waiting out there somewhere. One of my chickens laid it. Within its shell is a thin slither of a memory. A holy thing passed down through the eons. It is hidden to keep the other jealous birds from devouring it. It rests where the wind has no echo and the sun casts two shadows. But I am old and weak. I cannot reach it.”

And once the player agrees: “Yes. Very good. Very good. The holiest birds lay the most precious eggs, and the wisest hens make their nests in high places where crawling things cannot reach them.”

  • One line appears on a single channel and is attributed rather than folded in: “The eyes that willfully remain closed commit a graver sin than those born blind.”
  • Two channels also record her thanking-line about the egg she gave you: “It is but a symbol, a harbinger, if you will, of what is to come. The egg is not the gift. The yolk holds what is truly divine.”
  • The captions split on two words. Her first sentence is transcribed “a burst” on two channels and “a verse” on a third; “it pressed me eyes shut” on two and “pressed me up shut” on another. Machine captions cannot settle either, so both are recorded and neither is repaired.
  • “Will you answer its plea?” is rendered “its please” or “it, please” by every caption track here. Plea is the reading that makes the sentence work; it is not established by the sources.

The journal, read aloud twice

The riddle is the only direction the quest-giver gives, and it is not a route. What is closer to one is the journal entry, and two players on two different channels read it out loud without either of them being anywhere near the other’s session.

At 04:42:20 one player is scrolling his quest log for his audience and reaches this one: “this one says he wants an egg, but not just any egg. Well guarded somewhere at the top of the tower.” He repeats the location back to himself — “the top of the tower. There’s an egg somewhere.”

Four hours into a different stream, at 08:45:28, another player reads his own log the same way: “there’s a well-guarded egg somewhere at the top of the tower.”

Two independent readings of in-game written text agreeing on the same three words — top of the tower — is the strongest thing on this page, and it is the only location claim it publishes.

  • The first reading says “he wants an egg”, and the quest-giver is a woman. Either the journal summarises a different speaker, or the player is paraphrasing. No source resolves it and this page does not guess.
  • Neither reading gives a room, a floor or a landmark. Top of the tower is where the journal stops.
  • Both readings predate no update relevant to them: one session is from 17 August 2026 and the other from 18 August 2026, both before Update 6 and Update 7. Update 7 says quests now mark areas on the map, so a current-build player may simply be shown where this is.

Nobody in these recordings finds it

This is the part of the quest worth knowing before you spend an evening on it. Six sessions have the conversation. None of them produces an egg.

The clearest case is the ten-hour session. He takes the quest at 04:22, reads the journal entry back at 08:45, and at 09:31 he is standing on the map explaining to his audience that a lady told him to go look for an egg — then walks back to her and triggers the identical speech again at 09:33:26, five hours after first hearing it. He is checking whether the quest is still active. It is.

Nothing in that is a criticism of the player. It is the ordinary experience of a quest whose only direction is a riddle, and it is recorded here because an edited walkthrough would cut it out.

  • One player summarises the quest to his chat as “There are more eggs in the tower. And the eggs will give you power.” That is his own gloss, not game text, and no source cited here says an egg grants anything.
  • A co-op session ends its version of the scene with one of the two players saying “Probably shouldn’t have eaten that egg”, immediately before an unexplained camera effect. Whether the given egg can or should be eaten is not established here.
  • No source names the quest. Every recording refers to it by describing it.

She is still there after Update 7

Every session above predates Update 6 and Update 7, which between them rewrote quest directions and rebuilt the tower intro into what the developers call a proper dungeon crawl. A page built entirely on pre-update recordings would be worth very little.

One source cited here is not pre-update. A route video uploaded 23 August 2026 walks the tower interior for an entirely different quest and narrates the landmarks as it passes them. At 00:03:10 it stops at the skeleton who gives a quest; at 00:04:24 it points out “where is the giver who asked you to find the egg”, with her own voice audible under the narration; at 00:04:42 it reaches the amphitheater.

That places the quest-giver on the current-build tower route, in the same order relative to the same two landmarks, two days after Update 7 shipped. It says nothing about where the egg is. It does establish that the quest still exists and that the walk to her has not moved.

Requirements / limits

  • The egg’s location is not published here, because no source in this repository establishes it. Top of the tower is the journal’s wording and the furthest this page goes.
  • The riddle is published as a riddle. “Where the wind has no echo and the sun casts two shadows” has no confirmed referent, and matching it to a place on the map would be invention.
  • The hall’s name is not spelled here. Four channels render it four ways in captions and this project does not establish spelling from machine transcription.
  • The quest-giver’s name is likewise not published. Matron of the will is a title one player uses when addressing her on a second approach, not a name any source confirms.
  • Five of the six recordings predate Update 6 and Update 7. They are cited for scripted speech and for two journal readings, never for routing.
  • Update 7 says quests now mark areas on the map in a Morrowind-style way. If your current build marks this one, trust the marker over anything on this page.

Common mistakes

  • Walking away after taking the egg she hands you. The egg she gives and the egg she wants are two different objects; the quest opens on the follow-up question, and three recordings show the riddle playing only after the player asks what to do next.
  • Searching the chicken coops in town. She says one of her chickens laid it and that it is hidden from other birds — not that it is still where a chicken left it.
  • Reading “high places where crawling things cannot reach them” as a general hint about ledges. It arrives in the same breath as the journal’s top of the tower, and the two agree with each other.
  • Assuming a missed trigger when the quest does not close. One player re-ran the entire conversation five hours later to check, and the speech replays without breaking anything.
  • Treating the quest as abandoned because nobody has published a route. Nothing here says the egg is not implemented; it says nobody in the source pool has found it.

Still unverified

  • Where at the top of the tower is the egg?Not verifiedTwo independent journal readings agree on top of the tower and stop there. No recording in this repository reaches it, and the riddle has no confirmed referent.
  • What does “the wind has no echo and the sun casts two shadows” describe? Not verifiedOne player says out loud that it is either a Bob Dylan lyric or a hint, which is a fair summary of the evidence. Nothing matches it to a place.
  • Who is the “he” who is watching, sitting at the window and beckoning? Not verifiedShe never names him. The description resembles the Saint but no source connects them, and the resemblance is not evidence.
  • Is the egg she hands you meant to be eaten, kept or delivered? Not verifiedTwo inventories call it a soft-boiled egg. She calls it a symbol and says the yolk holds what is truly divine. One co-op player says he ate it. Nothing establishes what it is for.
  • Does finding an egg grant anything? Not verifiedOne player tells his chat the eggs give power. That is his own summary, contradicted by nothing and supported by nothing.
  • What is the quest called? Not verifiedNo source names it. Two read the journal entry aloud without reading its title.
