Where do I find serpentine grease for Rust In Peace?

The quest names an item you will never see in your inventory, which is why searching merchants for serpentine grease goes nowhere.

Quick answer

Wizard Worm's current-build walkthrough takes the quest from An'Dalus, a knight rusted immobile on top of a tower far to the west, then goes back to the starting hometown and swims to the shipwreck site. Crouch and sneak past the enemies there and open the container named dripping barrel; the item inside is serpent oil, not the serpentine grease the quest text asks for. Wizard Worm states the loot is not random and says he confirmed it by starting a new game. This route comes from one creator and has not been independently reproduced. A second, unrelated recording does independently show a knight whose armour has rusted onto him giving a grease objective — but in ruins south of Akatun in the far northwest, and it never reaches the item.

Steps

  1. Travel far west until you reach a tower. An'Dalus stands on top of it, unable to move because his armor has rusted.
  2. Take the Rust In Peace quest from him.
  3. Return to your starting hometown and swim out to the shipwreck site.
  4. Crouch and sneak past the enemies around the wreck rather than fighting through them.
  5. Open the container named dripping barrel. The item inside is serpent oil.
  6. Take it back to An'Dalus. He frees himself and rewards you.

What the reward was in this recording

  • A two-handed sword showing 68 damage plus 20 arcane damage.
  • The knight then offers to teach the armor skill, which is worth more than the sword to a character who intends to wear heavy armor.
  • Both figures are read off one recording's inventory tooltip. NerveLabs rebalanced weapons and enemy health in Hotfix 5 and again in Update 7, so treat the numbers as what that build showed rather than as fixed values.

A second recording of a rusted knight, and what it does not settle

  • Hommiepen's part three reaches Akatun, the village on the far northwest side of the island, and goes into ruins south of it. At 02:30:51 a figure there says his armour “has finally, inevitably rusted to my corporeal form”, that it took many years, and that he had hoped one of his kinsmen would stop by — or at least someone with that level of fortitude.
  • Three minutes later, at 02:34:11, that player says out loud: “we have to find a grease bottle”. He does not find it, and the session moves on.
  • So the quest exists on a second channel and the giver is again a knight rusted immobile. That is as far as it goes. Nobody names him on camera, the order his armour belongs to is a machine caption and is not printed here, and no recording shows a route from this encounter to any item.
  • The two descriptions of where he stands do not obviously agree: this page’s route puts him on top of a tower far west, and this recording finds him in ruins south of a village in the far northwest. Those may be the same place described from different approaches, or two encounters. Nothing cited here decides it, so this page does not.

Requirements / limits

  • The route below — the shipwreck, the dripping barrel, the reward — is still one creator, one recording, uploaded 23 August 2026, after Update 7. The second recording corroborates that the quest is given, not how it is finished.
  • Wizard Worm's claim that the barrel's contents are not random rests on his own restart test, described but not shown from a clean save on camera.
  • The knight's name comes from Wizard Worm's own written video description and title, not from machine captions.
  • The quest text and the item name do not match in this build. If NerveLabs renames either, this page needs rechecking.

Common mistakes

  • Searching alchemists and merchants for an item literally called serpentine grease. The thing you pick up is serpent oil.
  • Fighting the shipwreck instead of sneaking it. The route is a crouch-and-pass, not a clear-out.
  • Looting the wreck generally and missing the specific dripping barrel.
  • Turning in the quest and walking away without asking about armor training.
