Where is Bartolomaeus?

The one thing both walkthroughs agree on is that the quest's own hint does not get you there. They disagree about everything after that.

Quick answer

Two creators have published routes and they do not match. MaddyT leaves the tower on its west side, follows a small road downhill from a glass pyramid landmark, and finds Bartolomaeus slightly west of the tower. Wizard Worm says the only way through is the tower itself: enter at the hole, cross the dungeon and the Amphitheater, leave by the far lever, then follow the brick road to a house with a snail in the garden, where the wizard is usually on the second floor. Both agree the quest gives one clue, 'somewhere south of the tower', and that it is not enough. Neither route reproduces the other, and this page does not pick between them.

Early Access note: this page is verified for Early Access Update 7; mechanics, locations and commands may change in later updates.

What the sources agree on

  • The quest hands you one direction and it is south of the tower. Wizard Worm quotes it and calls it 'not a big clue'; MaddyT treats it as actively misleading. A third player, unconnected to either, reads the same direction off his own journal on 18 August 2026 and spends the rest of a ten-hour session not finding the wizard. A fourth, recording on 21 August 2026, is sent to the same wizard by a different quest item entirely, asks four times on camera where he is, and never finds him either.
  • Bartolomaeus is reached from the tower, not by searching the ground south of it.
  • He is the wizard for paid custom spell creation, distinct from Theodorus who teaches the basics.

Steps

There is no single set of steps to give, so here are both. They diverge at the tower and do not meet again in either recording.

MaddyT's route stays outside. Leave the tower on its west side, follow a small road, and go downhill from a glass pyramid landmark to find Bartolomaeus slightly west of the tower.

Wizard Worm's route goes through. Start at the location called the hole, jump into the water, follow the blue lights to the door, pull the lever, cross the dungeon past the skeleton named Peter and the Amphitheater performance, head for the statues and pull the exit lever. Outside, walk past the ruins and follow the brick road: keep left, turn left at the crossroads, take the uphill fork, left again, then right, past the large frogs, straight on, left, then right. The destination is a house with a snail in the garden, and the wizard is usually on the second floor.

These may be two ways to the same door or two different doors. Nothing in either recording settles it, so both are published side by side, attributed, and neither is presented as the correct one.

Preparation and the ending, from Wizard Worm

  • Buy the anchor spell from Theodorus before setting out. Bartolomaeus has recall, so an anchor set outside his house turns a long dungeon crossing into a one-time trip.
  • Carry the book. The Mentoring Magic quest is a delivery, and the book has to be in your inventory when you arrive.
  • Bartolomaeus refuses the request; his answer is still no. The quest then asks you to report back to Theodorus and you may lie or tell the truth.
  • Lying pleased him in that recording and he taught something about corrupting spells for free. Telling the truth produced only minor loot. Both outcomes come from one playthrough and neither is a rule.

Requirements / limits

  • Two sources, two routes, no reproduction. This page has more evidence than it did and no more certainty about the location.
  • MaddyT's recording predates Update 7 checks made here; Wizard Worm's is dated 23 August 2026.
  • The names Bartolomaeus, Theodorus and Mentoring Magic come from creator-written video titles and descriptions, not machine captions, which mangle all three.
  • The corrupting-spell reward for lying is one observation from one playthrough and is not a documented mechanic.
  • Two of the four recordings are cited only as failures to follow the quest's own direction, and as evidence that a second, unrelated quest item points at this wizard. Neither publishes a route, and both predate Update 6 and Update 7.
  • Update 7 rebuilt part of the route. NerveLabs list, under Updated, that the intro to the tower is now a proper dungeon crawl. Wizard Worm's route goes through the tower — the hole, the water, the blue lights, the lever, the dungeon, the Amphitheater, the far lever — and the first stretch of that is a section the developers say they have remade. Nobody has walked it since.
  • Update 7 may also have made the quest's own hint less useless. Two lines bear on it: many new POIs with quests now marking areas on the map, and directions to many quests improved. Neither names this quest, and no recording since 21 August 2026 has opened the map on it, so the page still assumes the hint fails.
  • The tower route also crosses the ground covered by two other Update 7 lines — various holes and gaps filled, and acrobatics correctly preventing fall damage at high velocity. Both are the kind of change a jump-and-drop route notices. Neither is named as affecting this one.

Another quest sends you here too

The Mentoring Magic delivery is not the only thread that ends at this wizard. An unlucky man living outside the village hands the player a heavy cube marked like a die. Show it to another NPC and the answer, on two unrelated recordings in the same words, is: “I’ve never seen material quite like this. It’s heavy, I’ll tell you that much. And whoever put these dice markings on it wasn’t who made the cube. Maybe Bartholomeus knows more.” One of the two adds a clause the other does not — “he’s been around a lot longer than I have.”

This was a single-source aside here until 24 August 2026, when a second recording of the same appraisal was found on an unconnected channel. It is now two independent public sources, which is the strongest grade this site gives player video, and it makes the cube a real second route into this quest rather than one player’s oddity.

That is worth knowing before you go: a reader who has the cube and no delivery quest is still being pointed at the same house, and the same useless southward hint. What the wizard says about the cube is not recorded anywhere this site can cite, because neither player reached him — one spends the rest of a ten-hour session looking, and tells his own chat that people have asked publicly and had no responses.

Common mistakes

  • Searching only south of the tower because the quest text points there. Both creators say that fails, and a third player demonstrates it.
  • Confusing Bartolomaeus, who enables custom spells, with Theodorus, who teaches the basics and gives the delivery quest.
  • Making the tower crossing without an anchor set, then having to make it again.
  • Treating either published route as the verified one because two sources now exist. They corroborate the problem, not the solution.

Still unverified

  • Do the two routes lead to the same house? Not verifiedMaddyT describes a glass pyramid and a small road west of the tower; Wizard Worm describes a brick road on the far side of the dungeon ending at a house with a snail in the garden. No source cited here connects the two descriptions.
  • Is the tower crossing mandatory?Single unconfirmed reportWizard Worm states the only way to reach the wizard is through the tower. MaddyT's route does not appear to enter it, which is precisely why this is recorded as unresolved rather than answered.
