Where do I find Sandor the woodcutter?

This is the best-corroborated quest hook on the site and one of the worst-corroborated destinations. Five channels recording on four different days transcribe the request identically. Not one of them records the man asking it saying where to look.

Quick answer

In Magdal’s Rest, pick the dialogue option “Anything I can help with?” when talking to the retired traveller — not the tavern owner — and he tells you that his son Sandor, the town’s woodcutter, has been missing for a couple of days and asks you to keep an eye out. He gives no directions. One player asks him for them outright and gets nothing. The only location anyone gets is the journal entry the request writes, and two players read it aloud on different days: it says Sandor went deep into the forest, and one of the two adds “to the west”. Hours later the same journal, in the same player’s session, says instead that Sandor was standing at the foot of a massive tree — and that player says out loud that he does not remember where that is. Nobody cited here is recorded reaching him. Every recording predates Update 6, which NerveLabs says clarified quest directions and journal entries.

Early Access note: this page is verified for Early Access Update 7; mechanics, locations and commands may change in later updates.

Steps

  1. Find the retired traveller in Magdal’s Rest, standing among the market stalls rather than inside a building. Seven separate channels catch him muttering “now, where is that son of mine?” on a loop, which is the quickest way to pick him out. He is not the tavern owner; in one recording the player finishes with him and walks to the tavern owner seconds later, and that is a separate conversation with a separate rumour list.
  2. Choose the dialogue option “Anything I can help with?”. All five recordings reach the request through that line, and none of them reach it any other way.
  3. Hear him out and accept. The journal entry the request writes is the only direction anybody gets, so read it before you leave town.
  4. Go west, into the forest. One player’s journal says west; a second player’s journal says only that Sandor went deep into the forest.
  5. Look for a large tree once you are in there. One journal line describes Sandor at the foot of a massive tree, and the player reading it says he does not recognise the place.
  6. Do not go back to the quest-giver for directions. A player asks him for them on camera and is given none.

What the NPC actually says

Five channels recorded this exchange on four different days — 17, 18 and 19 August 2026 — and their machine captions transcribe it in the same words. That makes it scripted speech rather than one creator’s summary, which is why this page treats it as the quest’s text:

“This town knows nothing but trouble. But for the moment, the trouble is kept out there in the woods and the ruins. Sandor is a wood cutter here in town. He also happens to be my son. He normally brings back shipments on a regular basis, but he’s been out a couple days now, and I’ve not seen him since. He’s a troublesome lad sometimes. But I’d hate to think this damned island got the best of him. Should you venture out, keep an eye out, will you?”

Agree to it and he answers: “Thank you. All we have is each other in this cursed place. The closer he gets to that damn tower, the crazier he sounds.” Four of the five transcripts carry that last clause; the fifth loses it under a music cue.

That is the whole of it. There is no map marker described, no landmark named and no direction given, in any of the five — all of them recorded before the two updates that changed quest directions. The clearest evidence for the absence is a player who notices it: in the ten-hour session, at 02:11:32, he answers the request with “I need like directions, sir” and the conversation simply ends.

Where the location actually comes from

Not from the man who asks. From the journal, read aloud by two players on different days.

WolfheartFPS opens his journal at 01:13:16 on launch day and reads “Sandor the wood cutter went deep into the forest to the west.” RogueHeavy reads his own at 03:07:57 and gets “find Sandor the wood cutter deep in the forest”, with no compass direction attached. Both are in-game text rather than a creator paraphrasing, and they agree on the forest.

Three hours later the same RogueHeavy journal says something else. At 06:06:54, reviewing it because he is — his word — confused, he reads “Sandor was standing at the foot of a massive tree”, and immediately adds that he does not remember where that is. Something between 03:07:57 and 06:06:54 changed that entry, and the recording does not show what.

A third player, on a sixth recording, takes the quest and opens his map within twenty seconds. He says “to the west” twice while looking at it. That is weak corroboration and the page treats it as such: the same forty seconds also contain him deciding Sandor is a man who tried to kill him and then talking himself out of it, so the captions cannot separate what he read from what he assumed. It is worth recording because it is a third voice putting the destination west and the first one to do it with the map open rather than the journal.

At 06:33:02 the same player, mid-conversation with an NPC, says “I found Sandor deep in the ruins near a great tree”, and gets an answer about there being no shortage of grand trees in these parts. This page does not publish “ruins” as the answer. It cannot tell from the captions whether he is reporting something he did or reading a dialogue option off the screen, and the two are indistinguishable in a transcript. It is worth noting that the quest-giver’s own first sentence puts the trouble “out there in the woods and the ruins”, as two halves of the same wilderness rather than as alternatives.

Requirements / limits

  • The request is quoted from machine-generated captions across five files: WolfheartFPS 00:42:40, RogueHeavy 02:10:41, 4Itchy4EVER 02:18:43, PatricianTV 00:28:03 and Hommiepen 00:19:42. Treat it as what was said, not as a reading of the on-screen text.
  • The spelling of the name rests on those captions and on nothing else. Four of the five render it Sandor; the fifth renders it Xandor when the NPC speaks and Sandor when the same player later reads his own journal. This page prints Sandor because four independent transcriptions of four separate recordings agree, and it says so here rather than presenting the spelling as established. Every other proper noun on this site that is printed at all has a creator-written source behind it. This one does not.
  • The quest-giver has no name here. Two players in a sixth and seventh recording read a nameplate aloud and their captions render it Corbin and Gervin, which do not agree; nothing on this site prints a name for him. He is described only by what he says about himself: his journeying days are long past, he was a soldier once, and his liege perished. His other dialogue branches — including the one where he calls himself the town’s only law — have their own page.
  • Nobody cited here is recorded finding Sandor on camera, and no source states what finding him does, what he says, or what the reward is.
  • Every recording used on this page was uploaded between 17 and 19 August 2026, before Update 6 on 20 August and Update 7 on 21 August. NerveLabs says Update 6 clarified quest directions, points of interest and journal entries, and that Update 7 improved directions to many quests and made quests mark areas on the map in a TES3-style way — which is precisely the material this page is built out of. Neither changelog names this quest, so what a current build tells you about Sandor is not established here.

Common mistakes

  • Asking the tavern owner. He is a different NPC with a different conversation; his rumour round covers the magic trainer, the seer, the alchemist and a missing adventuring party, and it does not cover his neighbour’s son.
  • Waiting for the quest-giver to say where to go. He never does in any recording here, all of which predate Update 6 and Update 7; going back to him cost one player the time it took to find that out.
  • Treating “deep in the ruins” as the location. It appears once, in one player’s speech, in a form that cannot be separated from a dialogue option.
  • Reading the closing line as a clue. “The closer he gets to that damn tower, the crazier he sounds” never says who “he” is. Sandor is the obvious reading; the sentence works just as well for anyone the tower is pulling at, and no source settles it.

Still unverified

  • Where exactly is Sandor? Not verifiedTwo journals agree on the forest and one of them adds west. Nobody cited here is recorded reaching him, and no source describes the spot beyond a massive tree.
  • Is the tree in the forest or in the ruins? Not verifiedOne journal line says forest; one line of player speech says ruins near a great tree, and it cannot be separated from a dialogue option in the captions. The quest-giver treats woods and ruins as one region.
  • What changed the journal entry mid-session?Not verifiedThe same player’s journal says “deep in the forest” at 03:07:57 and “standing at the foot of a massive tree” at 06:06:54. The recording does not show what happened in between, and no other source has the second wording at all.
  • Who is “he” in the line about the tower? Not verifiedFour transcripts carry the sentence identically and none of them attach a name to it.
  • What happens when you find him?Not verifiedNo recording in this repository shows the meeting, the outcome or the reward.
