Pichess wants a cave cleared and his ring back. Where is the cave?

This is Pichess’ second quest, and it is the one where the game contradicts itself. The journal calls it a cave on the western beach. The dialogue, on three separate channels, sends you north. Nobody in this repository finishes it — and the one player who gets to the sand is fighting things that heal themselves back up.

Quick answer

Ask Pichess for more work after the Nuisance quest and he offers a bounty: a cave is infested with eyeless creatures, he wants them killed, and — as an afterthought at the end of the speech — he wants a ring back that he left there. The journal entry two players read aloud is “Find Pichess’ ring. A cave on the western beach is infested with eyeless monsters. He wants them dead and his ring returned”, and one player’s quest list shows the entry titled “Pichess’ cave on the western beach.” His spoken directions do not match that. On three channels he says the place is over on the north shore, by the tower, and the fullest version of the route is “follow the beacons that lead to the hole in the tower, then keep going north past the canyon. You’ll find the beach and in the nook, the cave.” This page publishes both and resolves neither, because both are in-game text. No recording here completes the quest. One player navigates to the western side of the island by map, reaches the beach, fights creatures that recover their health mid-fight, and his session ends without him finding the cave.

Early Access note: this page is verified for Early Access Update 7; mechanics, locations and commands may change in later updates.

Steps

  1. Talk to Pichess, the merchant in Magdal’s Rest. This is a second job, offered when you ask what other work he has — in every recording here it comes up after the Nuisance cart quest, not before it.
  2. Hear him out to the end of the speech. The ring is the last sentence, and it is delivered as an afterthought after he has already finished describing the job.
  3. Read the journal entry before you leave. It is the only text that names the coast: a cave on the western beach.
  4. Decide which direction you are following, because the game gives you two. The journal says western beach. The spoken directions say the north shore, past the tower, north past the canyon.
  5. Whichever you take, the cave is described as being in a nook, and he says you will hear the creatures before you see them.
  6. Expect the fight to go badly. The eyeless recover health during combat in two unrelated recordings, and neither player knows whether that is intended.
  7. Nothing beyond this point is established here. No recording in this repository enters the cave, kills the eyeless, or produces the ring.

The offer, word for word

Three channels record this conversation on three different days, and the longest of them runs the whole speech without the player interrupting. It is quoted rather than summarised because the only route the game speaks aloud is inside it.

The opening, on the fullest recording at 02:49:55: “There’s a little beach that used to be a nice quiet place to relax. Not anymore. I want you to fix that. It’s full of eyeless freaks now, like the rest of the island.”

Then the directions, at 02:50:16: “Follow the beacons that lead to the hole in the tower. Then keep going north past the canyon. You’ll find the beach and in the nook, the cave. You’ll hear their sounds. Get rid of them.”

Then the warning, which is the same warning he gives about every errand that passes the tower: “Do your best not to fall into the tower on your way there. If you see shapes that don’t make sense, don’t try to make sense of them.”

And last, on all three channels in the same words: “Oh, and there’s a ring I left there. I’ve changed my mind and I want it back.”

  • A second channel at 02:12:35 has the location as a separate answer — “over on the north shore of the island, on that damn tower” — followed by the beacons line and “you’ll hear their sounds”, in a shorter arrangement.
  • A third channel at 00:40:26 has the same short form: the player asks what other quests he has, and the answer begins “on the north shore”, “the north shore of the island”, “on that damn tower.”
  • The ring sentence is identical on all three. The rest of the speech is assembled differently on each, which is what a dialogue tree looks like when three players click through it in three different orders.
  • No recording here gives the quest a name. Two read the journal, and one of those two shows the entry titled “Pichess’ cave on the western beach.” That is a journal heading, not a confirmed quest title.

West or north? The game says both

This is the thing worth knowing before you spend an hour walking, and it is the reason this page exists rather than a route.

Two players on two channels read the journal out loud. At 00:57:17 one of them reads: “Find Pichess’ ring. A cave on the western beach is infested with eyeless monsters. He wants them dead and his ring returned.” At 01:05:34 a different player, on a different day, scrolls his quest list and reads the entry’s own heading: “Pichess’ cave on the western beach.”

Two independent readings of in-game written text agreeing on the word western is as strong as this site’s scale goes for a location claim.

Against that, the spoken directions on three channels point north — the north shore, past the tower, north past the canyon. The two are not obviously reconcilable: one player, reading the journal, immediately says “the western beach, huh? That’s going to be over here somewhere” and heads west; another, hearing the speech, says “so there’s a house on the north side of the island” and looks north.

Both are the game talking. The page reports the conflict and does not pick a side, because picking one would mean telling readers to ignore half the game’s own text on nothing but a coin toss.

  • One reading is possible and is not asserted here: an island’s north-western coast can be described either way, and the tower sits between the two descriptions. Nothing in the sources says this, and it is offered as a hypothesis a reader can test rather than as a finding.
  • The player who went west did reach a beach. He never reached a cave. That neither confirms nor refutes the journal.
  • Every recording here predates Update 6 and Update 7. Update 6 says quest directions and journal entries were clarified, and Update 7 says quests now mark areas on the map. If your build puts a marker on this, the marker is better evidence than anything on this page.

Why he wants it back

One player refuses to take the job until he is told why, and keeps asking. The answers are on one channel only, and they are recorded here because the quest reads as a fetch errand until you hear them.

His first answers are deflections: “Someone’s got to run this place. I’m the glue that holds this town together.” Then, “look at you, you’re practically built for this kind of thing.” Then, flatly, “look, you just do it because I’m paying you.”

The player asks again. At 02:13:17 the merchant says “you’re really insistent on knowing, aren’t you?” — and then answers: “Someone I knew long ago, back when I first came to this island, loved that. We discovered it together. Our little secret. At some point tower got to her. It always does.”

That is the only backstory any source in this repository gets out of him, and it exists because one player would not let the conversation end. The caption drops a word after “loved that”, so what she loved — the beach, the cave, the ring — is not established.

  • This dialogue is single-source. It is published attributed, and the page does not fold it into the quest description.
  • “At some point tower got to her” is the same phrasing other NPCs use about the tower. No source connects her to any named character.
  • The merchant is separately recorded, on two channels, saying he has another house he has been working on fixing up. That is a different loose thread and is tracked on the Nuisance page, not here.

The eyeless recover their health

The one combat fact this page can establish comes from two unrelated players who never reach the cave but do fight the same creatures elsewhere.

At 01:54:04 a launch-day player identifies them by name — “these are eyeless” — and then, mid-fight, “damn, he got his health back. It’s some bullshit.” He hedges it honestly: “I don’t know if these things are bugged or if this is just how they are.”

A week later, on a different channel, the player who walked to the western beach fights something there and says “do they — they must reheal in the water.” He is guessing at the mechanism, and the page prints the guess as a guess.

What survives from both is the observation, not either explanation: these things get health back during a fight. If you are going in for the ring, budget for it.

  • Neither player establishes whether the healing is a designed ability, environmental, or a bug. Update 7 does not mention it.
  • The second player’s fight is on the western beach, not inside a cave, so it is not established that these are the same enemies the quest names.
  • Both sessions predate Update 7.

Nobody in these recordings finishes it

Five sessions have this quest available. None of them produces the ring.

The furthest anyone gets is the player who reads the journal, opens his map, says “this is the western side, I think that’s the cave he’s talking about”, and walks there. At 01:16:19 he says “all right, we made it to the beach.” At 01:20:21, still on the sand, he says “okay, so there’s a cave somewhere that I’m supposed to get to.” His session ends eight minutes later.

One further case is recorded and deliberately not counted. A ten-hour session has a player standing in an unnamed dungeon at 02:27:26 saying “I was supposed to clear out all the monsters in here and I didn’t. Or maybe I’m supposed to find a ring” — which is this quest’s two objectives, in order. The surrounding twenty minutes of that recording never name the place, and the page will not put him in a cave the transcript does not put him in.

  • A co-op session takes the offer at 02:50 and, an hour later, heads for a different beach — the one the game started them on. They never go.
  • The quest does not appear to expire or fail. It sits in the log.
  • No source in this repository establishes a reward.

Requirements / limits

  • The cave’s location is not published here. Two in-game journal readings say western beach; three recordings of the spoken directions say north. That is the whole of the evidence.
  • Nothing on this page is a walkthrough of the cave, because no source in this repository has been inside one that can be identified as this one.
  • The reward is unknown. The merchant never states one and nobody collects it.
  • The backstory about the woman is single-source and attributed. So is every line about why he wants the ring.
  • Every recording cited here predates Update 6 and Update 7, both of which changed quest directions, journal entries and map markers. The dialogue is cited as scripted speech; none of it is cited as current routing.
  • The merchant’s name is spelled Pichess here on the strength of the developer changelog and the creator-written description of another video. Captions in these recordings render it Pitches throughout, and this project does not establish spelling from machine transcription.

Common mistakes

  • Walking away before the last sentence. The ring is tacked onto the end of the speech after the job has already been described; a player who closes the dialogue at “get rid of them” has heard the bounty and missed the fetch.
  • Assuming the journal and the merchant agree. They do not, and following one of them is following half the game’s directions.
  • Confusing this ring with the other one. A skeleton at the Amphitheater asks a player to find Peter’s ring, taken by something in the tower. That is a different quest-giver, a different ring and a different place, and this page has nothing to say about it.
  • Confusing it with the cursed item. A separate NPC hands over a heirloom he cannot get rid of, made of tyrasite, which returns to him no matter what he does with it. Also unrelated.
  • Expecting a marked cave mouth. The only description of it is that it is in a nook and that you will hear the creatures first.
  • Fighting the eyeless the way you fight everything else. Two players record them getting health back mid-fight.

Still unverified

  • Is the cave on the western beach or the north shore? Not verifiedTwo independent journal readings say the western beach. Three independent recordings of the spoken directions say the north shore, past the tower, north past the canyon. Both are the game’s own text, they conflict, and no source reconciles them.
  • What is the reward? Not verifiedPichess never names one and no recording in this repository completes the quest.
  • Who was the woman he discovered the place with?Single unconfirmed reportOne player pushes the dialogue far enough to get an answer. She is not named, the caption drops the word for what she loved, and “tower got to her” is not explained.
  • Do the eyeless heal by design? Not verifiedTwo players on two channels record them regaining health mid-fight. One says outright he cannot tell whether they are bugged. Neither update mentions it.
  • What is the quest called? Not verifiedOne player’s quest list shows the heading “Pichess’ cave on the western beach.” Whether that is the quest’s title or the journal’s summary line is not established.
  • Was one player standing in this cave at 02:27:26 of a ten-hour session? Not verifiedHe states this quest’s two objectives in order while standing in a dungeon the recording never names. Twenty minutes either side of that were read and do not place him. Recorded rather than claimed.
